CIE TC 1-58 “Visual Performance in the Mesopic Range”

The International Commission on Illumination – CIE – is an organization devoted to international cooperation and exchange of information among its member countries on all matters relating to the science and art of lighting. The technical activities of CIE are carried out in Technical Committees (TC's) under the responsibility of seven Divisions each covering one sector of light and lighting.

CIE has established a Technical Committee TC 1-58 to study performance based mesopic photometry. The first meeting of the TC 1-58 was held in Tokyo in June 2004 along the CIE Div1&2 meetings. It was decided at the meeting that the TC work, based on the terms of reference, will go on effectively in order to complete the work in four years. The chairman of the TC is Professor Liisa Halonen from the Lighting Unit of Aalto University.

CIE TC 1-58 Terms of reference are

To define mesopic visual performance and related terms. To investigate performance based photometry in the luminance region below approximately 10 cd/m2. To propose a model for the basis of performance based mesopic photometry.'

Currently TC 1-58 is outlining the existing and forthcoming works in the mesopic field in order to collect and compare data and to form a basis for future standard on performance based photometry. TC invites you to participate in a research survey about mesopic photometry. Filling the survey takes less than five minutes of your time. Your contribution will be highly appreciated.

TC 1-58 is hosting the CIE Expert Symposium ‘Vision and Lighting in Mesopic Conditions ‘05'. This Symposium is held along the CIE Midterm-Meeting in Léon Spain in May 2005. The Symposium will take place on May 21, 2005.
